Summer is here...Are you ready for that long drive?

Vacation season is here, are you ready for that long drive? A few relatively inexpensive steps can ensure that your car will hold up in the summer heat, withstand the pain of traffic jams and minimize long-term maintenance costs.
  • Check the cooling system: Cooling system neglect can cause the mechanical failure of a vehicle. In addition to the danger and inconvenience of a breakdown, the damage to the engine and transmission can add up to be big money. Have your car inspected or perform a visual inspection of hoses, belts, radiator, radiator cap and coolant level before taking any big trips.
  • Check fluids: Have the motor oil changed before long trips if you’re close to the recommended service interval as the oil also helps to disperse or carry heat through the engine.
  • Check the tire pressure and tire wear:  Be sure to add air in the case of heavy loads. For most vehicles the recommended tire pressure is located on the information sticker mounted to your driver’s door.
  • Brake inspection: The brakes should be inspected every 30,000 miles. If the brakes are making noise or you’re experiencing any vibrations when braking then the brakes should be inspected before the 30,000 mile recommendation.
  • Wiper fluid and blades: They need regular attention. Greasy windshields can become opaque in a wicked thunderstorm and lead to accidents.
  • Air conditioning:  If you plan to travel to areas of extreme heat, be sure to have this checked and charged if needed. The gas (refrigerant) in the a/c system carries the oil through the system. Running low on refrigerant doesn’t only keep the air from getting cold but it can also cause it to lack in lubrication which may result in total loss of cold air.
So before you set out for adventure this summer, check your vehicle’s owner manual for your maintenance schedule. Major services are generally due every 30,000 miles. If your odometer reading is a multiple of 30,000, it’s time to make that service appointment.

Sincerely,

Pepper's Google + Review Prize Raffle

Tracy * Pepper * Matt
Congratulations to our April winner Matt Schilz !!!!!

Thank you Matt for this wonderful Google+ review!

Quality: "Excellent"
"My car was running rough, and it was struggling to turn over (battery had just been repaired). I heard about Mick's through a friend, and took my 07 IS250 to have it checked out. I was helped out right away and Tracy educated me on some of the issues this particular model has had. My factory warranty ended last summer, and I was worried I was in for a heavy amount of work. I had received a few TSBs from Lexus about other issues, but don't recall getting one about this specific issue. Anyway, rather than charging me to fix the issue at a nice profit for himself, he told me that the dealership would see this problem as a defect once they tested it for themselves. Sure enough, I got the car over to Lexus and everything was as Tracy said. Lexus is going to rebuild my engine at no cost. It's extremely tough to find an honest auto shop that is willing to educate its customers. I've had all my work done at the dealer since day one, but I know that I'll be back to Mick's for future service. One more thing. The staff is all extremely friendly and actually take an interest in their customers. Thanks Mick's!"

May Cabin Air Filter Special*

May Cabin Air Filter Special*
 by Bloo Darson

Living in Santa Cruz this time of the year is always so exciting. From our Bay area wild flowers to the amazing foliage that grows this time of the year in our redwood forest, it's a plethora of visual beauty and smells.  What better time than now to have your cars cabin air filter replaced.  Although hidden, a cabin air filter performs a very important function. Not to be confused with an engine air filter, this piece of equipment removes contaminants such as dust, pollen, mold spores and other small particles from the air that circulates through your cars ventilation system.

To keep air quality at its best, filters should be replaced according to manufacturers' recommendations, generally once a year or every 15,000 miles. Regularly changing cabin air filters can maximize the life of your car's HVAC system by reducing debris and corrosion on the evaporator core.

Cabin air filters stop most airborne particles, and some are even capable of eliminating odors. That's welcome news for people with air quality concerns, especially those with allergies. Do you remember the last time your cabin air filter was replaced? Ask us about our May Cabin Air Filter Special*, you'll breathe a whole lot better.

Call us today at (831) 464-6855 to schedule your May Cabin Air Filter Special* appointment.
(valid thru May 31, 2013)

* A Savings of $10 - $20!
(prices vary depending on vehicle)

What to keep in your glove box

What to keep in your glove box

The glove box can be a useful treasure chest in cars, housing everything from important papers and receipts to tire gauges and extra fuses. It's a safe, easy-to-access place for crucial items, and almost every car has one. Even the best of us are sometimes guilty of littering our glove boxes with unnecessary items like CDs or cosmetics.

Don't let yourself go down that path. Rather, be prepared and consider the following things to keep on hand.

License and registration: Keep all important documents like proof of insurance, automotive registration and a copy of your driver's license in a plastic bag or held together by a paper clip.

ICE: Experts at AAA recommend keeping an ICE — in case of emergency — card with important information about you and your passengers. On that card you should list emergency contacts, physicians, any medications used or allergies for you and your passengers. Download an ICE card here.

Put your owner's manual on a diet: We'd all like to keep our car's owner's manual in the glove box, but have you seen the size of these things lately? If your car came with a combo pack of a manual plus other materials like stereo or navigation instructions, optional warranties and more, put the less vital guides elsewhere. Keep just the main manual — with important info on engine care, wiper blade sizes and more — in the glove box.

Tire pressure gauge: Unless you have a new Nissan Altima with its Easy Fill Tire Alert system, a tire pressure gauge is one of the most essential items to have in your glove box. Thankfully, it's also small.

Flashlight: There are dozens of small — sometimes even flat — LED flashlights on the market that take up only a little space but emit a lot of light. A flashlight will come in handy when trying to change a tire in the dark.

Fuses: Stock your glove box with a few backup fuses, which can be picked up at a hardware store for a few dollars. If your car's taillights or power windows stop working, replacing a blown fuse takes just seconds. Fuses are ideal for the glove box because they're tiny.

Wheel-lock key: Wheel locks help to ensure that someone won't walk off with your car's pricey wheels, but you won't be able to change a flat tire without the wheel-lock key. If your car has wheel locks, keep the key in the glove box next to the tire pressure gauge.

First-aid kit: If your car is short on storage space, find a small pouch or container and make a basic first-aid kit for the glove box. It should contain adhesive bandages, tissues or cotton balls, a pain reliever like aspirin and backup prescription medicine. You could put the ICE card in there, too. Some retailers carry first-aid kits for glove boxes such as the LifeLine, which costs less than $10.

Phone charger: If you have a smartphone you know how quickly the battery can run out of power, especially if you're using Bluetooth. Luckily, most chargers are small. A cellphone is one of the most important items you should have with you in a car in case of an emergency; don't let it run out of juice.

Paper map: Put a printed — yes, printed — fold-out map in your glove box. In this day and age where portable GPS units and cellphones with navigation software dominate, having an up-to-date paper map as a backup is just plain smart.

OUR FEBRUARY GOOGLE+ RAFFLE WINNER!

CONGRATULATIONS CHRIS!

Chris Blum submitted this
Review
 and won our February

"Pepper's Google+ Prize Raffle"
... A $75 Gift Card for "CAFE CRUZ".

Quality: Excellent
"I have been taking my hybrid Highlander for 4 years. I had some very unpleasant experiences at the dealership so I looked for another place to take care of my car. Mick's Automotive is very close to my house so I checked them out. Tracy blew me away with a thorough explanation of my car's needs and when to have them done. The service plan that the %&%#@!$? dealership recommended was too expensive and a lot of the work that it called for could be done further down the line as my car is a hybrid and the engine does not have to work as hard. Frankly, I was happy with that but then Mick's went on to deliver timely, efficient service for a reasonable price. They also sought out cheaper options when it came time to replace parts (CV boots for instance). My wife and I are very happy with Mick's Automotive. We cherish an auto mechanic that we can trust."

Thank you EVERYONE for your wonderful reviews!

Is your car using too much gas? Price for gasoline is getting up there, and if you’re not careful enough while driving, you could be spending a lot more than you have to on fuel.

There’s some good and bad news for those looking to get better mileage with each tank. First, the good: it is possible to squeeze out more miles per gallon, even without having to spend money on a new hybrid car, or extra maintenance. The bad news: it’s going to require a change in your driving habits.

Nick Chambers, Green Car Specialist tells us that “even small changes such as driving a bit slower, anticipating traffic lights, trying to come to a full stop as little as possible, accelerating in a steady/relatively slow manner, using cruise control and planning trips to have the least amount of travel and stops, can make big differences.” In fact, these changes can account for as much as a 15 to 20% improvement, he says.

Focused on saving money and the environment from behind the wheel, ecodriving.org lists five “Golden Rules” for gas tank friendly driving, and have some reasoning behind why they work. Let’s take a look at a few tips they provide.

First and foremost they advise to “Anticipate traffic flow.” This means look ahead and act instead of react. Try to increase the distance between your car and the vehicle ahead of you, so you can drive smoothly. For example, stepping off the accelerator before the traffic flow is slowing down, is more effective than braking strong, which wastes kinetic energy. The overall goal of anticipating traffic flow is to let the vehicles roll and drive at a steady speed whenever possible instead of braking and accelerating quickly.

Another tip for optimizing fuel economy is to maintain a steady speed at low RPM.  Driving at high engine speeds increases fuel consumption. As a result, you can save fuel by driving in the highest possible gear, and the lowest possible RPM. Ecodriving.org says “Especially for city driving there is nearly no chance to increase average speed or gaining time advantage with strong acceleration and speed peaks.”

In fact, many modern cars with automatic transmissions come with an ‘eco’ button that, when pushed, will ensure your car is in the highest gear possible gear for that speed, and help smooth out your actions on the gas pedal.

One habit based tip to increase fuel efficiency is to obey the speed limit, and drive sensibly. Weaving through traffic uses more gas than staying straight, and accelerating above the speed limit usually involves high-revving antics. Also avoid accelerating up inclines. Keep the speed steady and coast down hills.

Other tips include proper outfitting of your vehicle. For example, extra weight can cause significant decreases in fuel economy. Some drivers use their car like a backpack, and don’t empty them out frequently enough. If possible, van owners should consider removing the back seats if they aren’t going to be in use. Losing the extra weight will help increase mileage. For pickup truck owners, you can reduce wind resistance by putting your tailgate down. Just make sure you don’t have anything loose back there which could fly out. Reducing wind resistance also includes removing roof, ski or bike racks.

Lastly, make sure your car is working properly. Tire pressure should be properly inflated and ensure your car’s alignment is correct. Tire pressure can cause up to a 3% difference in your fuel economy. These sorts of tips are echoed by the experts at fueleconomy.gov. The website has several tips that help drivers eke out that last MPG.

More detail oriented drivers will appreciate fueleconomy.gov’s mobile site which allows users to track their usage from their smart phone. Using the “Your MPG” section of the site, visitors can log their miles per gallon right at the pump, allowing you to comment on the routes, conditions and details of every mile in your tank.

These tips will certainly be useful as prices for gas increase. Analysts estimate that gas prices could spike up to record levels this summer, so be sure to remember these tips if you’re looking to save some money. In fact, the group behind ecodrive.org is looking to teach eco-driving classes so enjoy these tips while they’re free!

Quality Excellent- I don't usually write reviews, however I have to say I won't take my truck anywhere else ever again. These guys really know their stuff and are more than happy to explain all the details pertaining to your vehicle and the services performed. I highly recommend taking your Toyota or any Japanese vehicle here. They have a clean shop and show attention to detail. This is the kind of place you want working on your car or truck. I appreciate the patience and the detailed explanations in "laymen's" terms so everyone understands exactly what part is needed and why it's important to your vehicle.
